Marshall J. Cook

Marshall Cook is a professor of creative writing in the Division of Continuing Studies, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He teaches workshops, seminars, and online courses on writing for the UW-Madison and is a frequent speaker at conferences nationwide.

Marshall's 27 published books include the Monona Quinn Mystery Series: Twin Killing, Murder at Midnight, and Murder Over Easy and the true crime book, The Great Wisconsin Manhunt of 1961. Writer's Digest published his guide, Give 'Em What They Want: The Right Way to Pitch Your Novel to Editors and Agents, written with Blythe Camenson. Other books include Baseball's Good Guys: The real heroes of the game, with Jack Walsh, Off Season: A Novel of Love, Faith, and Minor League Baseball, and Handling Worry: a Catholic approach.

Marshall edits Creativity Connection, a newsletter for writers and independent publishers. He has published articles and short stories in hundreds of regional and national magazines and is a columnist for ByLine magazine. He is an instructor at The Annual Writers Institute, Write-by-the-Lake and School of the Arts.

Marshall holds his BA in creative writing and his MA in communications from Stanford University, where he studied under Wallace Stegner. He has been married to Ellen since 1968, and they have one son, Jeremiah. When not writing or teaching, Marshall likes to read, jog, lift weights and talk back to the television (not all at the same time). He is a passionate minor league baseball fan, drives the back roads, and eats in small town cafes.

This conference is supported in part by a grant from the
Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin.
