Al P. Nelson Contest Winners
The 2010 Nelson Contest had 42 entries and was
judged by Kelly James-Enger of Downers Grove, Ill., contributing
editor of The Writer magazine, whose articles have appeared
in 50 national magazines.
The winning manuscript focused on an eccentric
country beekeeper, about which James-Enger said, “This article stuck
in my mind more than any of the others.” Overson’s tale remembers
the first encounter, as a 10-year-old girl, meeting this old man
with a worn and weathered face. She was smitten by his bee colony,
made of glass and kept in his cluttered living room. “The bees,” she
realized, “brought joy and purpose to his days. I learned that one
person’s passion can be contagious. When that passion is offered,
shared and accepted, differences melt away. He gave me an
understanding and respect for bees I still have today.”
The Coon Valley writer, the mother of four, lives on
the farm of her childhood and operates the Lane Writing Co.
At the judge’s discretion, two entrants received
Certificates of Merit to recognize the quality of their works.
