WRWA Board Approves
Honorary Life Membership Policy

WRWA Honorary Life Membership is a respectful tribute for meritorious service.

  1. Meritorious service is demonstrated by:
    (1.) making extraordinary and/or distinguished contributions as an active member of WRWA. This might be accomplished by working within the structure of WRWA as Board Member, Officer, Committee Member, Conference Chair, or as a member fulfilling tasks, projects, or activities authorized, encouraged, and assigned by the Board;
    (2.) possessing extraordinary and/or distinguished credits, awards, or other evidence that identifies the candidate as a recognized, well-known, and published writer, poet, or author.

  2. The Board shall appoint an Honorary Life Membership Committee consisting of at least three members.

  3. Any WRWA member may propose a candidates name to the Life Membership Committee for consideration for Life Membership status. A member proposes a candidate by submitting a written summary of the candidate's activities, achievements, contributions, and other qualifications, using the above criteria as a guide. This written summary can be used for publicity in the Newsletter, the Web site, etc.

  4. The Committee shall consider the merits of all the proposed candidates and make its recommendations to the Board. The Board shall elect Honorary Life Members by a majority vote.

  5. Honorary Life Members shall owe no Annual Dues from the date of their election and shall enjoy all the privileges and benefits of membership in WRWA.

Notes:

  1. There is no reference to longevity. Longevity doesn't equal extraordinary or distinguished service, nor does it necessarily produce noteworthy contributions and achievements. One member may make extraordinary and distinguished contributions within a very short period of time while another member may be a member for forty years and do nothing extraordinary or distinguished during that time.

  2. In number 2 above, there is no reference to WRWA membership. This would allow the Board to] bestow Honorary Life Membership status on a writer, poet, or author who is not a WRWA member, but who (for whatever reasons) members and/or the Board desire to honor the person with this status.

  3. By submitting the qualifications and achievements in writing, the Association has a written record for examination by both the Committee and the Board as well as a written record of facts that can serve as the basis for either the nominator or someone else to write a story for inclusion in the newsletter, for the President or other presenter to use during the presentation ceremony, and for any other publicity, including the WRWA Web site. A short blurb and picture of each Life Member on the Web site would be an excellent way of honoring selectees.
