Writing Non-Fiction

Is there a place in our organization for someone who writes mostly non fiction?

I certainly do think so. Currently I'm writing features for a trade journal. RDH magazine is read, ravenously, by 60,000 dental hygienists across the USA. In January I have a article I co-authored with a dentist I met online about sleep apnea. Up until July of 2007 I was writing for a peer review journal on a monthly basis. That means every single thing I wrote had to be substantiated and referenced. It was the most grueling kind of writing. I'm also a book publisher. I co-published a book I co-authored with my friend who at the time lived in Las Vegas. We met online and wrote the whole book online; I don't think we ever got together at all during the whole writing experience.

The secret trend in non-fiction writing is to incorporate some of the fiction writing tools. We want people to read what we write too! Making non-fiction readable is what allows me to write non-fiction. I did a three year tour for a peer review journal and the editor routinely excised my personality from every piece. We were not of the same mind. My readership went down substantially. No one likes boring writing. Belonging to any writers association continually stimulates the creative juices. Belonging to WRWA does that and supports my writing by allowing me to try things and get some feedback from people who care about me before I send it into the magazine.

I spend the majority of my membership time on the Online Community and the feedback I get is instant and thoughtful. This is the only writers group I belong to, because this one fills my professional needs.
